~3 minutesWhat is a Hoot profile?
Every time Hoot coaches your comment, generates ideas, or refines your draft, it reads your profile first. The profile tells Hoot who you are — how you speak, where you comment, what reading level to aim for, and what it should never do. Without a profile, Hoot guesses. With one, every response sounds like you.
Two controls, two layers
In the comment workbench action bar you will see two controls:
- Context pill — shows your active coaching context (e.g. "Study Group"). Tap it to switch contexts or adjust per-context settings like delivery format, length, and feedback style.
- 🦉 About you — opens your personal base profile: style, experience, opener, never-list, and source preferences. These apply to every context.
Set your context
Tap the context pill to expand the context panel. You have six coaching contexts built in — Study Group, Standup, Seminar, Presentation, Language Practice, and Daily Exercise. Each has its own defaults. For every context, you can set:
- Delivery format — Is this a spoken comment, an email, a text message, or a written essay?
- Comment length — Quick (15–20s), standard (~30s), or extended (a minute or more).
- Reading level — Simple, plain, detailed, or scholarly vocabulary.
- Feedback style — Encouraging, balanced, or rigorous coaching.
- Notes — Anything specific to this context: pronouns, constraints, tone preferences.
Tell Hoot about you
Tap 🦉 About you to open your personal base profile. These settings shape every AI response regardless of which context is active:
- Style — How you talk: warm and conversational, direct and concise, analytical, or storytelling.
- Experience — Your comfort level: beginner, some experience, experienced, or seasoned.
- Opener — How you typically start a comment. "I usually ask a question" or "I get right to the point."
- Never-list — Things Hoot should never do. "Never say 'What strikes me,'" "no personal stories," "avoid filler."
- Preferred sources / Avoid sources — Sites Hoot should search or stay away from.
- Freeform — Anything else Hoot should know about you.
Switch contexts on the fly
Tap the context pill and select a different context — the switch is instant. Whichever context is active when you press Coach, Refine, Ask Hoot, or Explore Ideas is the one Hoot uses. Your base profile always applies on top.
Try it
Write a comment, set your context and base profile, then press Coach. Compare the coaching you get before and after adjusting the settings — you'll see the difference immediately. Try switching from "spoken comment" to "email" and notice how Hoot adapts its tone and structure.

Tips
- Start with the defaults — each context has sensible defaults. Adjust one field at a time and see how coaching changes.
- The never-list is powerful — if Hoot keeps suggesting something you'd never say, add it to your never-list. It won't come back.
- Context + base = your voice — the context sets the occasion (standup, email, seminar); the base profile sets who you are. Together they make every response yours.
- Delivery format matters — "spoken comment" gets coaching for timing and phrasing; "email" gets structure and tone for reading. Set it and forget it.
- Use the notes field — pronouns, constraints, audience quirks. Anything specific to one context goes here.
