What is the Daily Text?

The Daily Text is a daily reflection exercise built on any short reading. Each day, you read a text and complete three exercises that build on each other:

  • One Word — Pick the single word that best captures the essence of today's reading. This trains comprehension and forces you to distill meaning.
  • One Sentence — Summarize the reading in one sentence. This builds your ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Full Comment — Write a complete comment with AI coaching on clarity, depth, vocabulary, and natural phrasing.
This exercise sequence is genuine scaffolding — each step builds on the previous one. Language teachers call this "task-based learning" and it works because you're producing language, not just consuming it.
02

Choose your text

You have three ways to get your daily text:

  • Auto-populate — If you've imported a daily devotional file (EPUB) into your Resource Library, today's text loads automatically when you open the Daily Text page. Just pick the date and go.
  • Pick from library — Browse any imported resource (Bible, article, book) and select a passage to use as your text for the day.
  • Paste your own — Type or paste any text you want to reflect on — a scripture, a quote, a news excerpt, song lyrics, anything.
You don't need a special file to use Daily Text. Any text works. The exercises are the same regardless of where the text comes from.
03

Complete the exercises

The exercises unlock in order. You must complete each step before the next one appears.

Step 1: One Word

Read the text carefully. Then type the single word that you feel best summarizes it. There's no right answer — it's your interpretation. After you submit, you'll see insights: "You chose perseverance. Yesterday: faith. Your top word this month: hope."

Step 2: One Sentence

Now distill the reading into one sentence. This is harder than it sounds — it requires you to identify the core message and express it clearly.

Step 3: Full Comment

Write a complete comment using the regular Comment Coach compose form. Your comment gets AI coaching on clarity, conciseness, depth, and relevance. For language learners, coaching also covers grammar, vocabulary, and natural phrasing.

Hoot celebrates each step with you. Completing all three exercises counts as a full day for your streak.
04

Track your streak

Every day you complete at least one exercise, your streak grows. The streak badge shows your progress:

  • 1-6 days — one flame
  • 7-13 days — two flames
  • 14-29 days — three flames
  • 30+ days — diamond

Miss a day and your streak resets to zero — but your longest streak is always saved. You also earn participation levels over time: Seedling, Growing, Rooted, and Summit.

05

Share with a group

After completing your exercises, tap Share with group to create a challenge link. Send it to family, friends, or study partners.

Recipients see the same text and must complete their own exercises before seeing anyone else's answers. This prevents copying and creates genuine surprise when the results are revealed.

After everyone submits, the game board shows:

  • Word Cloud — Everyone's one-word choices, with matching words highlighted. When two people pick the same word, you'll see a "Great Minds Think Alike!" moment.
  • Sentence Gallery — All one-sentence summaries displayed as cards. Each participant can vote for their favorite.
  • Readiness Scores — Full comments ranked by coaching score, with the group average displayed.
The group game works without accounts. Recipients can play anonymously — they'll be prompted to create a free account after 3 days of playing.

For language learners

Daily Text is especially powerful for learning a second language. Here's how to get the most from it:

  • Import texts in both languages — If you have the same daily reading in your primary and secondary language, import both. The reader shows your primary language with a "tap to compare" toggle for side-by-side bilingual study.
  • Vocabulary scan — AI highlights 2-3 words worth learning in each text, with definitions, example sentences, and cross-language translations. Tap "Add to vocabulary" to track them.
  • Write your comment in your target language — The coaching context automatically adjusts for language practice, giving you feedback on grammar, vocabulary diversity, and natural phrasing.
  • Practice daily — Language learning is a consistency game. The streak mechanic keeps you accountable, and each day's exercises take only 5-10 minutes.
07

Importing a daily text file

If your daily reading comes from a publication available as an EPUB file, you can import it once and have each day auto-populate:

  1. Download the EPUB file from the publisher's website to your device.
  2. Go to SettingsResource Library and drop the file in the import area.
  3. Comment Coach detects the format automatically. Daily devotional files are recognized and each day's text is extracted with its date.
  4. Return to the Daily Text page — today's text now loads automatically.
Imported files stay on your device in browser storage — they are never uploaded to Comment Coach servers. You are responsible for complying with the original publisher's terms of use.

Tips

  • Start with just the one word — If you're short on time, even one exercise counts toward your streak. Come back and do the rest later.
  • Pick the word that speaks to you — There's no wrong answer. Your word choices over time reveal patterns in what resonates with you.
  • Read aloud before submitting — Especially for language learners, hearing your own sentence helps catch unnatural phrasing.
  • Share with someone — The game is more fun with others. Even one partner transforms it from homework into a daily ritual.
  • Check your calendar — The monthly calendar view shows your completion pattern. Green days are complete, amber days are partial. Try to fill the month.
