Interlinear View

Read Thai, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Hindi word by word — with pronunciation and meaning beneath every word.

What is Interlinear View

When you open source material written in a non-Latin script, every word is displayed in three rows:

  • Original script — the word as the author wrote it (bold)
  • Romanization — how to pronounce it in Latin letters (blue)
  • Gloss — a short English meaning (gray, italic)

This lets you follow along in a language you're learning without needing a separate dictionary or translator. Each word is broken out individually, so you can read at your own pace.

Supported languages

  • Thai — dictionary-based segmentation + phonetic romanization
  • Chinese (Mandarin) — word segmentation + pinyin with tone marks
  • Korean — word segmentation + Revised Romanization
  • Russian — Cyrillic transliteration (BGN/PCGN standard)
  • Hindi — Devanagari romanization (IAST-style)

How to use it

In the document reader: open any publication that contains non-Latin text. The interlinear view appears automatically beneath the original paragraphs — no button to press, no setting to enable.

In the playground: visit /ilv to try it with any text. Pick a language tab, paste or type your text, and press Show Interlinear. This is useful for experimenting with text that isn't part of a publication.

Word Mastery

Subscribers can track their vocabulary progress. Tap any word to cycle its status:

  • New — full intensity, all three rows clearly visible
  • Learning — the gloss fades, encouraging you to recall the meaning
  • Known — the entire word fades, so your eye focuses on words you haven't mastered yet

Your progress is saved per word and per language. Over time, familiar words recede and new vocabulary stands out — the text gradually becomes easier to scan.

Where it appears

The interlinear view is active in the document reader whenever the source material contains text in one of the supported scripts. It works with any EPUB or study article that has been imported into your library.
